Introduction: Part of the book: coffee was first produced in Ethiopia several centuries ago. There is an old story about its discovery, and there is probably some truth to it. Some say that a goat-herd called Kaldi noticed that his goats became very glad after eating the berries from one particular grass. Kaldi talked about this discovery to the Abbot of the local church, who made a drink from the berries and found it kept him awake through the long hours of evening prayer. This knowledge of energizing effects of these berries began to spread east toward the Arab world. The Arabs were the first people to plant coffee and also to buy and sell it.
